Former BYU basketball superstar Jimmer Fredette is returning to the NBA.
Multiple news outlets are reporting that Fredette has agreed to a two-year deal with the Phoenix Suns, who happen to be the Utah Jazz’s opponent on Monday at Vivint Smart Home Arena.
The Suns have an option on the second year of the deal, according to Shams Charania of 98.7 FM Arizona’s Sports Station and The Athletic.
Fredette just concluded his third season playing professionally in China. His Shanghai team was recently eliminated from the Chinese Basketball Association playoffs.
Fredette — the consensus national college player of the year in 2010-11 after leading BYU to the NCAA Tournament’s Sweet 16 — has averaged 38.6, 36.9 and 36.1 points per game for the Sharks the past three seasons, leading the league in scoring all three seasons.
He was the CBA Most Valuable Player after the 2016-17 season.
After he was selected with the 10th pick of the 2011 NBA draft, Fredette played in the NBA for five seasons, averaging 6.1 points per game and shooting 38.1 percent from 3-point range. He played for Sacramento the first three seasons of his NBA career, then saw limited action with Chicago, New Orleans and the New York Knicks before taking his game to China.
The Suns are 17-55 heading into Thursday night’s game and have not reached the postseason since 2010.
