The El Paso Chihuahuas handed the Salt Lake Bees their second loss in as many nights as the Bees fell 5-4 in 10 innings in front of an announced crowd of 3,618 at Smith's Ballpark on Wednesday night. The Bees (25-22) fell to 7-5 in one-run games and have dropped the first two in their eight-game homestand.
Turning Point • El Paso (22-25) scored in the top of the 10th on Rocky Gale's RBI double, and relief pitcher Phil Maton made that run stand up in the bottom half of the inning. El Paso scored against Bees relief pitcher Garrett Nuss, who had been promoted from High-A in advance of Wednesday's game. Nuss tossed two wild pitches and allowed two hits in his Triple-A debut.
Bees MVP • Designated hitter Dustin Ackley went 3 for 6 with two runs scored and three doubles.
Hidden Hero • Alex Klonowski pitched a season-high seven innings after getting off to a rocky start. His innings were important considering the Bees bullpen has been heavily depleted by promotions.
Quoteworthy • "I think he was pitching away from contact the first couple innings then he just started pitching like he knows how to pitch, pitching inside, locating his breaking ball a lot better those last few innings, and he did really good job of pitching us into the ninth inning," Bees manager Keith Johnson said of Klonowski.
Angel Angle • Bees reliever Brooks Pounders pitched one scoreless inning for the Angels in Wednesday's loss to the Tampa Bay Rays. The Angels also sent pitchers Mike Morin and Huston Street to Salt Lake on rehab assignments to pitch for the Bees on Wednesday night. Morin pitched one scoreless inning without allowing a hit, and he struck out two batters. Street retired the side in order in his lone inning.
