State colleges: Utah Valley falls at St. John’s, 96-78

Southern Utah’s men’s and women’s teams each get past Weber State; Utah skiers win Denver Invitational

New York • Posh Alexander had a season-high 20 points as St. John’s defeated Utah Valley 96-78 in a nonconference men’s basketball game on Saturday.

Julian Champagnie had 19 points for St. John’s (9-7). Vince Cole added 15 points. Isaih Moore had 13 points. Josh Roberts had four blocks plus four points and seven rebounds.

Trey Woodbury had 23 points for the Wolverines (5-6). Jamison Overton added 18 points. Evan Cole had 17 points.

St. John’s totaled 51 points in the second half, a season best for the team.

Southern Utah 77, Weber State 72 • In Cedar City, Maizen Fausett had a career-high 24 points as the Thunderbirds won their ninth consecutive home game, narrowly defeating the Wildcats.

Fausett hit 11 of 13 foul shots.

Harrison Butler had 18 points for Southern Utah (11-3, 6-2 Big Sky Conference). Tevian Jones added 17 points. John Knight III had eight assists and six rebounds.

Isiah Brown had 26 points and six rebounds for the Wildcats (7-4, 2-2), whose four-game win streak was broken. Zahir Porter added 12 points. Dillon Jones had nine rebounds.

The Thunderbirds leveled the season series against the Wildcats with the win. Weber State defeated Southern Utah 91-67 on Thursday.

Women’s basketball

Southern Utah 76, Weber State 74, 2OT • In Ogden, Southern Utah swept its two-game series against Weber State with a double-overtime victory over the Wildcats.

Cherita Daugherty was the leading scorer for the Thunderbirds (7-4, 2-2 Big Sky), with a career-high 24 points. She also pulled down seven rebounds and dished out four assists.

Liz Graves and Darri Frandsen both posted double-doubles as Graves scored 18 points and pulled in 12 rebounds, and Frandsen scored 12 points and pulled down 11 rebounds. Frandsen also had four blocks.

Daryn Hickok and Jadyn Matthews each scored 16 points to lead the Wildcats (0-9, 0-6). Matthews added 11 rebounds.

Skiing

Utah wins Denver Invitational • In Minturn, Colo., Utah clinched the victory after the Nordic team closed out a strong weekend of racing.

The alpine team had a great start and was second after its races, but Westminster doesn’t have a Nordic team. The Utes ended up winning by 75 points after the Nordic portion.

On Saturday, the Utah women had five in the top eight of the 7.5K Classic, while the men placed three in the top seven.
