Weber-Bingham high school football game canceled after three Bingham players test positive for COVID-19

(Trent Nelson | The Salt Lake Tribune) Bingham's Saleka Ataata (22) celebrates a sack as Bingham defeats East in the Class 6A High School State Football Championship game in Salt Lake City, Friday November 17, 2017.

Two days before the high school football season is scheduled to begin in Utah for all but two teams, a game has been canceled due to the coronavirus.

Weber and Bingham were set to open their season Friday at Bingham High. But the game was axed after three players from Bingham tested positive for COVID-19, the Jordan School District confirmed Wednesday.

The news comes just one day before Herriman and Davis were set to be the first two football teams in the United States to play a regular season game since the start of the pandemic.

Bingham is the latest high school football program in Utah to be affected by the coronavirus. In June, a staff member from Herriman tested positive, forcing the team to quarantine. Several other programs — including Granger, Corner Canyon and Layton — also dealt with positive tests.
