State colleges: Utah Valley basketball downs Grand Canyon 92-80

Orem • Brandon Averette scored a career-high 23 points as Utah Valley topped Grand Canyon 92-80 on Saturday in front of a season-best crowd of 6,600.

Isaiah White added 15 points and seven rebounds for Utah Valley (11-17, 5-8 Western Athletic Conference), which swept a regular-season series from the Antelopes for the first time since the 2014-15 season. Casdon Jardine added 14 points, Jamison Overton had 12 and and TJ Washington had a career-high 13 assists.

Utah Valley posted a season-high 26 assists on 29 field goals.

Alessandro Lever had 23 points and three assists for the Antelopes (12-15, 7-6).

Weber State 82, Southern Utah 71 • In Ogden, Cody John scored 28 points, Jerrick Harding added 22 and Weber State beat Southern Utah.

John shot 4 for 6 on 3-pointers and went 12 for 12 from the foul line. He added eight rebounds. Harding also had six rebounds.

Michal Kozak had 12 points and seven rebounds for Weber State (11-16, 7-9 Big Sky Conference).

John Knight III scored a career-high 24 points for the Thunderbirds (14-13, 7-9), who have lost four straight.

Skiing

Joachim Lien won his third race of the season and the Utes were the top-scoring team in both the men’s and women’s giant slalom races to increase their lead at the Utah Invitational in Park City.

Utah holds a 163.5 lead going into the slalom races on Sunday, scoring 584 total points, leading Colorado (420.5) and Denver (418.5).

Utah scored 100 points in the women’s race after placing three skiers in the top five. Eirin Engeset earned her third podium of the season, tying her career-best finish with a second-place finish. Katie Parker earned the first podium of her career with a third-place finish. Sona Moravcikova finished in the top five for the second time this season.

Lacrosse

Utah 17, Furman 9 • A big second half powered the Utes to a comeback win over the Paladins at Rice Eccles Stadium.

The Utes (2-2) trailed 6-4 at the half, but outscored the Paladins 13-3 in the second half.

Colin Burke led Utah with four goals and four assists. MJ McMahon, Mac Costin and Jimmy Perkins all had hat tricks.

Zion Dechesere took over in goal at halftime and made six saves and only allowed two goals.

Baseball

Missouri 3, Utah 2 • In Corpus Christi, Texas, the Utes fell to 2-4 on the season after losing to the Tigers in the Kleberg Bank College Classic.

Utah pitchers David Watson and Ian MacIver allowed just seven hits. Watson had a career day, striking out nine batters in six strong innings.

Tyler Thompson and Vinny Zavolta both went 2 for 3. Jayden Kiernan and Zavolta each had one RBI.

Softball

Utah 8, Cal State Fullerton 7 • In Palm Springs, Calif., the Utes (10-2) scored two runs in the top of the seventh to pull out a victory over the Titans (6-4).

Madi Jacobus and Katie Faulk drove in three runs apiece for Utah, which trailed 7-6 entering the seventh after Fullerton scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth.

Women’s basketball

San Francisco 60, BYU 58 • In San Francisco, despite a season-high 25 points from Brenna Chase Drollinger, the Cougars (16-10, 11-5 WCC) fell on a buzzer-beating put-back.

Drollinger shot 10 of 21 on the game, including 5 of 9 from 3-point range, while also adding four rebounds, three assists, two blocks and one steal. Paisley Johnson had 13 points, six assists, five rebounds, five steals and two blocks. Jasmine Moody added nine points and eight rebounds, while Sara Hamson contributed seven rebounds, five blocks and three points.
