The University of Utah volleyball team closed out a 3-0 opening weekend with a 26-24, 22-25, 25-16, 22-25, 15-13 victory over No. 23 Cal Poly on Saturday night at the Huntsman Center.

It’s the first time the Utes have beaten two AVCA ranked teams to start the season in program history.

Utah dug deep in the fifth set, winning three of the final four points to stay perfect on the weekend. Kenzie Koerber and Dani Drews got the final kills to earn the victory.

Koerber was named tournament MVP after setting a career high with 19 kills. The junior also had 15 digs and five blocks. Drews, Berkeley Oblad and Brianna Doehrmann all made the all-tournament team as well.

No. 16 Marquette 3, No. 9 BYU 1 • In Provo, the Golden Eagles topped the Cougars 25-22, 25-16, 25-22, 25-12 in the final match of the Nike Invitational.

Sophomore outside hitter Madelyn Robinson recorded a career-high 18 kills in front of a crowd of 4,075, the 11th highest home attendance in program history. Senior McKenna Miller contributed 10 kills.

Taylen Ballard-Nixon and Kennedy Eschenberg represented the Cougars on the all-tournament team.
