Utah’s new pro football team will be called the Salt Lake Stallions.

The Alliance of American Football, a new league that will begin play next February, released the nicknames and logos for the Alliance East last week. On Tuesday morning, the league unveiled its Alliance West nicknames and logos — including the Salt Lake franchise.

“The name Stallions honors the spirit of the region and the rumbling presence of horsepower, inspired by Utah’s famed Bonneville Salt Flats, where world land speed records have have been set and broken for decades,” Salt Lake coach Dennis Erickson said in a team statement.

The new franchise’s team colors will be sky blue, royal blue and silver, a scheme inspired by the blue sky off of the Great Salt Lake and the silver tips of the Wasatch Mountains, according to the team release.

The Alliance of American Football will include Salt Lake, San Diego, Phoenix and San Antonio in the west, and Orlando, Birmingham, Atlanta and Memphis in the east, with the season scheduled to kick off on Feb. 9.

Alliance teams are comprised largely of local college players looking to extend their careers. The Stallions are slated to play their home games at Rice-Eccles Stadium.

“The community can expect to see many familiar faces in Salt Lake Stallions gear,” Salt Lake general manager Randy Mueller said. “Through our allocation process, players from Utah, Utah State, BYU, Cal, Oregon, Boise State, etc. could end up on our roster. Salt Lake will love its Stallions.”
