On July 1, Rocky Mountain Power launches a new program that will help electric vehicle drivers save money by shifting energy use to off-peak hours, when demand for power is lower.
With gasoline prices at historic levels, many drivers are making the switch to electric vehicle (EV) . Rocky Mountain Power’s Electric Vehicle Time of Use program is now making it even more affordable for drivers to power their EVs from the convenience of their own homes.
Under the program, customers are billed based on the time of day they use electricity This means owners can save additional money powering their EVs and plug-in hybrids, as well as using household appliances during off-peak hours, when the demand for electricity is lower and less expensive.
Customers who enroll in the program pay approximately 25 cents per kilowatt hour during on-peak hours, and 5 cents per kilowatt hour for off-peak hours. Peak hours vary depending on the time of year.
Data from the program’s pilot phase shows participants saved on average $389 per year, and 93 percent of those enrolled indicated they were either somewhat satisfied or very satisfied with the program.
To qualify for the Electric Vehicle Time of Use program, Rocky Mountain Power customers must submit a copy of their Utah Department of Motor Vehicles registration for a plug-in electric vehicle that is either registered to the customer or is registered at the customer’s residential address where electric service is being provided.
“This is a great option for customers that will help them save money, support their individual needs, while promoting and supporting EV adoption,” said James Campbell, Director of Innovation and Sustainability for Rocky Mountain Power. “They are better for the environment, can help customers save money in fuel costs and helps provide an effective alternative to traditional gasoline-powered vehicles.”
To help facilitate the widespread adoption of EVs throughout Utah, the company will also continue adding new charging stations in their service territory, which is meant to encourage electric vehicle owners to take longer road trips while showing drivers who rely on gasoline-powered vehicles the benefits of making the switch to an EV.
