(Al Hartmann | The Salt Lake Tribune) Attorneys Brad Parker, left back, and James McConkie join Noor Ull-Hasan, a Muslim community leader, to announce that a diverse, nonpartisan group of attorneys and other professionals from around the state have formed the Refugee Justice League of Utah. The new organization is dedicated to promoting and defending the civil, religious, and constitutional rights of persons who are discriminated against on the basis of their religious beliefs and national origins. They will oppose and restrictions on the rights of refugees such as mandatory registration and any other laws that curtail the rights and privileges of people who live here.
The LDS Church has urged its members to reach out to refugees — whether through complex networks that span the globe or through neighborly acts of service that stretch across a fence.
Salt Lake City attorney Jim McConkie is doing his part by co-founding the Refugee Justice League, which provides free legal aid to Utah refugees.
