Provo • Shaylee Gonzales scored 17 points and Paisley Johnson made two free throws with 1:02 left for what proved to be the winning points in BYU’s 70-68 win over No. 13 Gonzaga on Thursday night, ending the Bulldogs’ 12-game win streak.
The victory left BYU (15-4, 7-0) alone in first atop the West Coast Conference after its ninth straight win.
BYU overcame a 12-point second-quarter deficit, tying the game at 34-all at halftime. The Cougars exchanged the lead with the Bulldogs eight times in the second half, taking their final lead of 65-62 with 4:21 remaining on consecutive baskets by Breanna Chase, who finished with 14 points.
BYU led 69-66 after Johnson’s final free throws. Laura Stockton drove for a score to get Gonzaga within a point with 36 seconds left before Gonzales made a free throw. Stockton missed a 3-pointer and LeeAnne Wirth a putback in the final seconds.
Johnson finished with 12 points for BYU and Jasmine Moody grabbed 10 rebounds.
Stockton led Gonzaga (16-2, 5-1) with 15 points and Zykera Rice added 13. The Bulldogs hurt themselves at the free-throw line, making only 17 of 26.
Men’s basketball
Utah Valley 82, UT Rio Grande Valley 61 • In Orem, Jake Toolson had 19 points and eight rebounds, and Utah Valley cruised to a victory over UT Rio Grande Valley.
The Wolverines (13-6, 2-2 Western Athletic Conference) have won seven of their last nine games. The Vaqueros (9-11, 1-3) have lost five of their last six.
Conner Toolson added 14 points for Utah Valley. Baylee Steele chipped in 12 points and TJ Washington had 10.
Terry Winn III scored 15 points to lead UTRGV. Lesley Varner II and Johnny Crnogorac added 10 points apiece.
Richard Harward’s dunk gave the Wolverines a double-digit lead about midway through the first half as they built a 43-27 halftime advantage. The Vaqueros pulled within 13 early in the second half, but Toolson’s 3-pointer and Steele’s hook shot sparked a 9-0 surge. Utah Valley led by at least 20 points the rest of the way.
Weber State 76, Idaho State 59 • In Ogden, Jerrick Harding scored 28 points, Brekkott Chapman added 19 points and 14 rebounds and Weber State broke away from Idaho State.
Harding made 10 of 16 shots and was 4 of 8 from 3-point distance, Chapman was 8 of 14 from the floor as the Wildcats shot 55 percent to Idaho State’s 33 percent.
Weber State (11-6) remained tied with Northern Colorado atop the Big Sky Conference standings at 5-1. The teams meet Saturday in Ogden.
Brandon Boyd scored 13 points to lead Idaho State (7-8, 3-3). Kelvin Jones added 11 and Balint Mocsan 10.
The Bengals built a 25-18 lead early, but Weber State closed out the first half on a 21-4 run to lead by 10 at the half, then scored the first five points of the second half on a Harding 3 and a Chapman jumper.
