Interfaith Month to highlight charitable works of Utah’s religious groups

Utah’s many religious groups will share beliefs, traditions and their common call to charitable service during Monday’s Generosity of Faith Fair.

The three-hour event at South Salt Lake’s Center for Spiritual Living, 332 Bugatti Ave., begins at 4 p.m. with a panel discussion exploring common Christian, Jewish, Muslim and other faiths’ teachings stressing care for the poor and hungry.

It’s all part of the Salt Lake Interfaith Roundtable’s annual “Interfaith Month,” which this year focuses on how Utah’s myriad religions express the call to generosity.

Interfaith Month spokeswoman Janet Healy said an open house will follow the panel discussion. Admission is free, though those attending are urged to bring nonperishable food items.

Those donations will go to the Episcopal Cathedral of St. Mark’s food pantry.

Other events planned include:

• Feb. 22, a 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. open house at the Sri Ganesha Hindu Temple, 1142 W. South Jordan Parkway, in South Jordan.

• Feb. 23, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., the Generosity of Service Project, sponsored by the United Methodist Committee on Relief. Participants will meet at 1479 S. 700 West in Salt Lake City to assemble hygiene, cleaning and school kits for use in ongoing humanitarian work.

• Feb. 25, 5 p.m., the Heritage Musical Concert, “Hold Up the Light,” will be held at Calvary Baptist Church, 1090 S. State St., in Salt Lake City.

• Feb. 27, 6:30 p.m., an interfaith guided bus tour begins at the Chabad Lubavitch of Utah synagogue, 1760 S. 1100 East, in Salt Lake City. In addition to the synagogue, the tour also will visit the Bosnian Islamic mosque at 425 N. 700 West, also in Salt Lake City.

• March 18, the culminating event of the Interfaith Month activities, the Sacred Music Evening, will take place at the Mormon Tabernacle on Temple Square in downtown Salt Lake City. Nearly a dozen faiths will share music, scriptural and poetic readings, and prayers during the event.
