Letter: Chapels are not charity

In his Jan. 11 letter to the editor, Todd Pearson is fine with the church having $100 billion in reserve, as it is needed for disasters, end-times and to help numerous people.

Let’s be clear about this. The LDS Church spends 7/10 of 1% of its income on welfare and humanitarian aid, and the City Creek Center cost $2 billion, more than all the humanitarian aid given since 1985 (source: Bloomberg News, 2012).

Money for temples, chapels, proselytizing missions, church-owned businesses and schools is not charity.

As for the Second Coming, Christians have been waiting for 2,000 years, Mormons for 190 years, and I have been told it is imminent for 60 years.
