Letter: Yes, there really is a ‘deep state’

(Jacquelyn Martin | AP) President Donald Trump adjusts his jacket as he walks toward reporters on the South Lawn of the White House in Washington, Friday, Oct. 11, 2019, before departing for a campaign rally in Lake Charles, La.

A longtime right-wing conspiracy theory claims there is a “deep state” operating behind the scenes as an unelected “shadow government.” It consists of entrenched powerful people secretly manipulating the government to further their own interests, independent of the elected government.

President Trump has said he is a victim of “deep state” forces, such as whistleblowers who are really spies.

Recently, Yale professor Timothy Snyder “unmasked” these deep state forces who are pushing back against Trump. He identified them as the Constitution of the United States and the rule of law.
