Letter: Mia Love’s actions show that she’s far from pro-life

(Al Hartmann | The Salt Lake Tribune) Utah Congresswoman Mia Love speaks to the Salt Lake Tribune editorial board Thursday Feb. 22 2018.

Mia Love’s campaign was quoted stating, “Mia will always fight to protect life. Her pro-life principles and votes in Congress are non-negotiable.”

Let’s look at what she has done in Congress to protect life. In 2017, she voted to repeal the Affordable Care Act, which, if successful, would have ended affordable health care for many Utahns. A study in 2009 (before the ACA) found that 45,000 Americans die each year due to a lack of health care. Love said she was “excited” about her vote.

She also has voted to reduce environmental protections. In 2017, Love voted in favor of HJR38, which reversed an earlier rule that would have further protected our waterways. And, more recently, she voted in favor of HR6147, which cuts funding for the EPA and hurts the Land and Water Conservation Fund. In case she isn’t aware, clean water and air are basic requirements for life.

These issues have a direct impact on all of us, not just the unborn. Rather than fighting to protect life, she is doing the opposite. Mia Love may be anti-abortion, but she is not pro-life.
