Volunteers of America, Utah, is on the hunt for donations to help keep their clients warm through the winter months. With their holiday drive finishing Friday, there’s still a few days left to drop off the extra hats, gloves, coats and scarves you may have lying around the house.
Information on in-kind donations and items from the Volunteers of America (VOA) wish list can be found on the VOA’s website. New or gently used items of greatest use are winter coats, hats, scarves and blankets to help homeless Utahns brave colder days and nights.
Donations can be dropped off at the VOA Youth Resource Center, 888 S. 400 West, or the Geraldine E. King Women’s Resource Center, 131 E. 700 South, in Salt Lake City daily, between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m.
But, according to VOA Volunteer Engagement Director Alexis Brown Brotherton, that’s not the only way to be helpful this holiday season. Brotherton says that this is the time when volunteers are most needed at the VOA. And, while the most popular volunteer position is meal serving at various centers, the VOA is also able to work with volunteers to create programs for their clients.
“Our most popular, most needed opportunities are serving meals at three of our locations and sorting donations at our two donation centers,” Brotherton said. “We also use the skills of some of the volunteers that come in that are interested in putting on some of that programming. … For example, if someone from a bank wants to teach a financial wellness class, they can get on a path to teach that.”
