Southwest plane has engine problem, lands safely in Salt Lake City

A Southwest plane that took off from Salt Lake City on Monday morning made an emergency landing at the airport after one of its engines appeared to catch fire midair.

Pilots for flight 604, which departed at 6:45 a.m. and was destined for Los Angeles International Airport, decided to return to the Salt Lake City airport after “receiving an indication of a performance issue with one of the aircraft engines,” Southwest Airlines said in an emailed statement.

Airport spokeswoman Nancy Volmer confirmed that an engine appeared to catch fire.

The pilots followed protocol, Southwest said, and completed an “uneventful” landing. No one was injured, and customers were to be placed in a new aircraft to continue the flight to Los Angeles.

“We apologize for the inconvenience, but safety is always our top priority at Southwest Airlines,” according to the statement.
