Mitt Romney’s ‘Game of Thrones’-inspired Mother’s Day gift goes viral, for all the wrong reasons

[SPOILER ALERT! Do not read if you have not watched the most recent episode of “Game of Thrones.”]

Mitt Romney’s Mother’s Day gift to his wife, Ann, is sweet and thoughtful — and, as the internet rose up to remind him, could not have been more poorly timed.

Utah’s junior senator posted a picture of the “Game of Thrones”-inspired gift Sunday on Twitter. It is a sheet-metal sculpture featuring the names of the Romney’s five sons — Ben, Craig, Tagg, Matt and Josh — with cut-out dragons for each name and the words “Mother of Dragons” uniting them.

The phrase is a reference to Daenerys Targaryen, the dragon-controlling monarch played by Emilia Clarke on the popular HBO drama. And it ignores a lesson most fans learned long ago: Never get too attached to any one character.

(Image courtesy HBO) In a scene from the May 12, 2019, episode of "Game of Thrones," Daenerys (Emilia Clarke) and her dragon, Drogon, has reduced King's Landing to ashes.

The reason the gift was poorly timed, as fans of the show know, is that in Sunday’s episode — the second-to-last in the series — the “Mother of Dragons” gave in to her violent tendencies and instantly became the story’s main villain. After her troops had forced Queen Cersei’s Golden Army to surrender, Daenerys used her last surviving dragon, Drogon, to torch the streets of the capital, King’s Landing, incinerating thousands of innocent civilians.

Twitter posters made Romney aware of his unfortunate timing.

“Lol, just in time for the fictional mother of dragons to go nuclear,” one reply read. Another said, “this didn’t age well.”

Randi Mayem Singer, who wrote the screenplay for “Mrs. Doubtfire,” posted a response: “You can always count on Mitt Romney to be behind the times.”

Some posters questioned whether the Romneys, as devout members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, should be watching a TV-MA-rated program infamous for bloody slaughter, nudity and sex.

In the words of one poster, “Mitt Romney is extremely embarrassing but I’m also CACKLING at the implication that he and Ann watch Game of Thrones.”
