Utah singer Tyler Glenn of Neon Trees fame taking his boots to Broadway

Neon Trees lead singer Tyler Glenn announced on his Facebook page Wednesday his latest gig: He’s heading to Broadway to play Charlie Price in “Kinky Boots.”

“Come see me May 6th-July 15th,” the Utah County-born rock singer says. And speaking of local ties, Glenn is taking over the role from David Cook, the winner of “American Idol” in 2008 over popular Utah singer David Archuleta.

“I’m over the moon to make my Broadway debut playing Charlie Price,” said Glenn on Facebook. “I love this show and its message of inclusion and its genuine sweetness and humanity.”

Returning to the “Kinky Boots” cast on May 1 as Lola is J. Harrison Ghee, who gloriously strutted in the character’s thigh-high red boots leading the cast on the Salt Lake City stopover of the national tour in January 2017. (Ghee is currently performing in Paper Mill Playhouse’s world premiere of “The Sting.”)

Glenn, who announced he was gay in a 2014 “Rolling Stone” interview, famously split up with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints over policies about gay members. In 2016, Glenn released his first solo album, “Excommunication,” with songs excoriating the church and founder Joseph Smith. Tribune writer Rich Kane described the album as sounding like “spiritual cage fighting.”

Glenn’s band co-headlined the LoveLoud Fest in Orem last year, and he is on the bill for the second annual concert supporting LGBTQ youth, which will be held July 28 at Salt Lake City’s Rice Eccles Stadium.

His story is featured in “Believer,” the Sundance Film Festival documentary following Imagine Dragons lead singer Dan Reynolds as he tries to reconcile his Mormon faith with his support for LGBTQ teens. As Reynolds was planning the LoveLoud concert, he called upon Glenn for guidance and inspiration. “Believer” is scheduled to air on HBO in June.
