Letter: As a Utahn, I know there is no sin worse than love and acceptance

(Francisco Kjolseth | The Salt Lake Tribune) The Utah Pride Center sponsors a protest at the Utah Capitol over HB77, a bill that bans pride flags from Utah schools and government property, on the last day of the Legislative session, Friday, March 7, 2025.

I know our Gov. Cox is too cowardly to speak out but I, for one, am extremely upset at the woke mayor, Mendenhall, and professional sports teams here still waving those Pride colors in our faces. This is Utah! The only color allowed here is beige! My house is beige. My entire neighborhood is beige. My entire suburb is beige. We are a beige people and we like it that way.

LGTBQ+ people may be fine people but having protested Pride festivals myself, I know from experience they are having too much fun. I know that is their agenda. They want to get people dancing, laughing, and (gasp!) having fun. They almost got me smiling but my judgmental scowl was too strong for them.

How awful and embarrassing that would have been had they succeeded!

Utah must stay beige! Beige is strong. Beige knows never to smile in public and beige knows there is no sin worse than love and acceptance for nonbeige people.

For this reason, I must protest! I will never go to a sports event (unless someone gets me free tickets but then I’ll cheer for the other team!). And I will never go to Salt Lake City (other than for my mandatory court appearances).

Happy Pride.

Stay Beige!

John P. Whipple, Salt Lake City
