Letter: Republicans used to be Americans, now they are Russians. And Democrats have become do-nothings.

Trump’s lies about the overwhelming percentage of Guatemalan illegals being violent murders and rapists have been thoroughly unmasked. It turns out only 12 out of 238 early deportees have convictions for murder, rape, assault, or kidnapping in the U.S. Three-quarters of them have no criminal records here at all. (“Most migrants sent to mega-prison have no apparent criminal record,” Axios, April 7).

If they were bad back home in Guatemala, they have apparently changed their ways here. That is what happened when felons from England were dumped on the American colonies in the 1600s and 1700s. Many or most became good citizens after they got a new start here.

It is easy to discern that Trump wants to get the American public used to summary arrests and punishments as a prelude to moving against his critics in the future.

The people and court systems of France and Japan know what to do with a criminal political leader. They either impeach and remove, prosecute, or disbar him/her from public officeholding. What has happened to America? Republicans used to be Americans, now they are Russians. Democrats used to be scholars, now they are driveling, emotional do-nothings.
