The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has a responsibility to object to ICE raids in houses of worship.
For a religion that is outspoken regarding protecting their religious freedoms, the church is surprisingly silent regarding their church buildings no longer being considered “sensitive places” and off limits to such action.
With their total population being over 16 million and 60% of it being outside the U.S.A., this could impact congregations directly. It is disappointing that there is only silence from the church regarding their loss of protected status.
The LDS Church would do well to follow the New York Quakers’ example of resisting the order through legal action.
Before this change, prior approval was required for immigration enforcement to enter these sensitive places. Now there is no approval needed.
For those of the church who believe in following the law of the land — one must question the legitimacy of these new changes and executive orders. The foundation of the Mormon religion honors martyrs who stood firm for their beliefs and resisted encroachment by the government.
Where is the resistance now?
