Letter: Swensen’s service on one special day in 2013 speaks volumes

(Francisco Kjolseth | The Salt Lake Tribune) Couples are married Monday, Dec. 23, 2013, at the Salt Lake City County offices after a federal judge in Utah struck down the state's ban on same-sex marriage, saying the law violates the U.S. Constitution's guarantees of equal protection and due process.

Yes, this is yet another love letter to Sherry Swensen. But not for all her years of ensuring that Utah has safe and fair elections, although we do thank her for that.

This is to point out a single day of her 32 year service: Dec. 20, 2013. Sherry Swensen and her clerks worked late that day as hundreds (thousands?) of couples came to get married. She and her staff worked late into the night. That night as my newly wed wife and I handed her our marriage certificate Sherry Swensen reached across the counter and put her hand on ours as she said, “I am so happy for you.”

Sherry, we are happy for you! And thank you for all your years of dedicated service.

Stacia Ireland and JoNell Evans, Millcreek
