Letter: Wouldn’t justice be best served if Trump’s crimes were punished with commensurate prison time?

(Kenny Holston | The New York Times) A broken decorative MAGA hat is swept up during a demonstration against Donald Trump on Election Day in Washington, Nov. 3, 2020.

Recently, we’ve seen Ghislaine Maxwell and R. Kelly sentenced to long prison terms for sex trafficking, one of the most heinous crimes against people and their personal freedom we can imagine.

At the same time, the committee to investigate Jan. 6 has brought into sharp focus the sinister plot of Trump and his cronies to limit our freedom to democratically govern ourselves.

Yes, there are many differences in these crimes, but the major one is that the Maxwell/Kelly actions affected less than 1,000 people, while Trump’s plot to control our freedom of self-government would have affected three hundred million.

Wouldn’t justice be best served if Trump’s crimes were punished with commensurate prison time? But, alas, I doubt any of the crooked politicians will ever serve a day in jail.
