Letter: Please vote for the modification of the filibuster to allow passage of voting rights laws

(T.J. Kirkpatrick | The New York Times) Sens. Kyrsten Sinema (D-Ariz.) and Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) during a news conference on Capitol Hill in Washington on Wednesday, July 28, 2021.

Sens. Manchin and Sinema:

Recently the filibuster was amended to allow Democrats to pass an increase in the U.S. debt ceiling. This was a good thing!!! A default by the U.S. government on its debt would have horrific consequences for the U.S. and world economy.

As Sen. Raphael Warnock of Georgia so eloquently stated recently in a speech, if we can modify the filibuster for the increase in the debt ceiling, we must also modify it to allow Democrats to pass the “Freedom to Vote Act”, which you helped author. We must also allow the passage of the “John Lewis Voting Rights Act” which you have said you support. I hope you will listen to this speech and take its important message to heart! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j8IUcqU9EuE

Nothing, nothing, is more important than protecting voting rights!!! We must see that every citizen is allowed to easily vote, that their votes are fairly counted, and that legislatures will not overturn election results!!!

I am sure you know that if Republicans win in 2022, they will disband all investigation of the attempted coup against our voting and our democracy leading up to and on January 6, 2021. New information is coming out daily about how coordinated this effort was and how close they came to succeeding!!! Our democracy is at stake.

Please vote for the modification of the filibuster to allow passage of the above voting rights laws. Again our democracy is at stake!!!
