The Tribune’s coverage of the changes President Biden made to Bears Ears and Grand Staircase national monuments gave me pause. I learned that over the last 113 years, 14 Republican and 11 Democratic presidents have made 25 declarations affecting the creation or size of Utah’s national parks and monuments.
After reading the story, I took note of the verbs describing those presidential declarations: established, expanded, added, confirmed and restored. Those verbs describe every president’s actions concerning the borders of our nation’s natural wonders, except one. Only one president reduced boundaries — Donald Trump.
