Letter: All Americans would gain from Biden’s infrastructure bill, which could be funded by reversing Trump’s tax cuts

(Evan Vucci | AP) President Joe Biden gestures as he takes questions from members of the media after speaking about the bipartisan infrastructure bill from the East Room of the White House, Tuesday, Aug. 10, 2021, in Washington. Vice President Kamala Harris listens at left.

The national debt increased by some $7.8 trillion under Trump. That’s 40% over just 4 years — fueled by his tax cuts. Who gained? The rich, most of whom vote Republican and fund republican candidates. Who lost? The average American, whose “share” of the national debt increased by $23,000. The richest 200 gained more than $3 trillion.

Now we are in a climate crisis. Biden wants to spend some $4 trillion over 20 years. On an annual basis, that’s about 10% of what Trump spent — and almost all of it is aimed at the climate, health care and infrastructure. Who gains? Every American — and the world as a whole. Most of it — maybe all — could be funded over 4 or 5 years by reversing Trump’s tax cuts.

I’d also like to see TV stations fined when they clearly lie when issuing propaganda that favors their favorite politicians, e.g. Trump. Not to put too fine a point on it, that’s brainwashing plain and simple. Take Fox, for example. According to a recent survey, only 28% of its audience rated their news “somewhat credible” or better. But that 20% are the core of Trump’s support.

Federal and state laws provide severe penalties for lying under oath. I think we should apply the same laws to politicians and news outlets trying to influence the people. The national deficit would be paid off in no time, and the world would be a better place!
