Letter: Rather than quiet prayer, let’s demand action

(Rick Egan | The Salt Lake Tribune) Low water levels at bullfrog resort, on Sunday, May 16, 2021.

Gov. Spencer Cox is not the first to call people to prayer, hoping that God will intervene in a state or national crisis. Cox echoes a tradition that the Puritans, George Washington and Abraham Lincoln employed in American history.

There is a difference, however. Early Americans believed that war, famine, sickness and drought were God’s way of communicating disapproval. The people were called to pray, confess their sins, and right their wrongs.

People are responsible for destroying their planet. Rather than quiet prayer, let’s demand action. Governor Cox, you gave individuals a list of ways to conserve water. Better, if we acknowledge climate change. Stop promoting fossil fuels, mining, and drilling. Advocate for solar, wind, and geothermal power. One more thing, governor: Ask people to pray for the climate change scientists.
