Letter: Chasing animals with dogs for ‘sport’ should be banned

When I read the recent article in The Salt Lake Tribune about a man with dogs pursuing a bear to the point of exhaustion just to put it in a cage until it recovered then pursue it again, I was horrified to learn everything he did was legal, as long as he had a permit, until he caged the bear. In fact, the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources issues hundreds of pursuit permits every year to do this!

Pursuers with permits are allowed to chase bears and cougars with dogs, but not kill them. Killing them requires a hunting permit. This “sport” harasses wildlife and seems highly unethical to me. Who came up with this and why is this allowed? It should be banned.
