Letter: A prayer inspired by Gov. Cox’s request to pray for rain

(Francisco Kjolseth | The Salt Lake Tribune) Sun pokes in and out of the clouds while patches of rain bring moisture to the Salt Lake Valley on Thursday, June 6, 2019.

Dear Heavenly Father,

Please send rain. Give us a miracle. Help us so that we do not have to help ourselves. Give us rain so that we may continue to consume it all and make no changes. Father, close our eyes as we waste the water of our children, their children, and theirs after that. Harden our hearts as well, Father, so we feel not of their pain. Give to us Your Divine Intervention and allow us still our unchecked capitalist drunkenness, our most prized religion. Send us rain. Or empty cold water on us so we sober up already.

Father, let our words of prayer not be empty. Aid the Governor that he might stand against those who sell the futures of our children to buy fleeting wealth, power, and comfort. Protect them from the men who take as if our Earth were endless and poison Her for profit. Protect our children, Father, from all those who do them harm, from those who live in excess and consume all they can since everyone does. Somehow, Father, after we have had our way, let there still be something left.

Let us live as if we won’t be saved and the Earth remade again. Help us to learn to help ourselves, and one another and our Earth. So we might have abundant rain and a life-sustaining Earth, if just for kicks.

Let those who see only impossibility know that otherwise is always possible. Heavenly Father, give us hope again.

Let us not die by taking without end, Father. Rather help us that we might LIVE, happier, content, and with true wealth as we give all we can so we all can survive.

This I pray in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.

Kelton Whittaker, West Jordan
