Letter: Instead of censuring Romney, GOP should work to support democracy

(Francisco Kjolseth | The Salt Lake Tribune) Trump memorabilia is sold during the Utah Republican Party’s 2021 Organizing Convention at the Maverik Center in West Valley City on Saturday, May 1, 2021.

The Republican effort to censure Mitt Romney is disgusting. They say he damaged the Republican brand.

What has damaged the Republican brand is the continued support for Trump’s big lie. It is the attempted whitewash of the Jan. 6 insurrection, allowing numerous conspiracy theorists to populate and serve in their ranks in Congress. It is their blatant effort to pass Jim Crow-type voter suppression laws around the country. It is their continued commitment to be the party of “No.”

They have no relevant platform, no constructive ideas, only obstructionism. Mitt Romney deserves congratulations and support for doing the right thing. The Republican party needs to revisit the principles and ideals that made it a viable part of American life.

They need to look outward to see what they can do to support democracy not tear it down.
