We believe the idea of permanently closing part of Main Street and making it pedestrian-only is a good one. We have been to several cities in Europe which have done the same thing with central downtown streets, and it makes exploring the city more fun and user-friendly. The sidewalk cafes in many cities encourage lingering and people-watching.
Even during winter months in Salt Lake City, most eating establishments could figure out a way to make their customers comfortable. And it helps that many of our large retail establishments (i.e., City Creek Center) also face Main Street.
If the TRAX trains are fenced off except at designated stops, there should not be a safety issue. Please just do it!
