Letter: Where is the vision for protecting the environment and creating a more livable city in Millcreek?

(Francisco Kjolseth | The Salt Lake Tribune) The Seven Canyons Trust nears completion of its project to open Three Creeks Confluence Park in Salt Lake City where Emigration, Red Butte and Parleys creeks meet the Jordan River near 1300 South and 900 West.

I read with interest the article, “Three old streams add sparkle to SLC’s west side,” describing the restoration of three buried waterways into a focal point where residents can enjoy an exposed natural setting. One designer is quoted as saying, “There’s so much that you can do with a daylighting project from improving water quality, providing recreational opportunities … creating more livable cities.”

I find this ironic since Salt Lake City and Salt Lake County are doing the exact opposite in the middle of our Millcreek neighborhood. Nestled along the intersection of the Utah Jordan Canal and Mill Creek just below Highland Drive is a beautiful little urban wildlife sanctuary where neighbors often walk to enjoy views of the creek, canal, large old growth trees and wildlife living along the banks. It is our little bit of green space in the center of Millcreek City.

One can enjoy a walk along the old canal, stand on the flume to view the water and see the wildlife. The creek and canal banks sustain a variety of wildlife including fish, birds of all kinds, ducks, hawks, owls, racoons, muskrats, squirrels, and a herd of deer.

Salt Lake City and Salt Lake County have decided against neighborhood protests to bury the canal and run a construction road on top. The old flume will be removed and replaced with a bridge. Roads will be dug into the banks on either side down into the creek where the sides will be cemented. All this destruction to “maintain” the creek.

We understand the need to replace the old flume, but do not understand the complete and total lack of regard for the wildlife, trees, and the environment as well a complete disregard of our neighborhood concerns. Where is the vision for protecting the environment and creating a more livable city in Millcreek?
