Letter: A more equitable way to elect representatives in Utah

(Leah Hogsten | The Salt Lake Tribune) Voting for Weber Countians took place at the Golden Spike Event Center, Nov. 3, 2020.

If Republicans would allow all citizens to participate in their caucuses and primary elections, Democrats and unaffiliated individuals wouldn’t need switch parties to have our voices heard.

If Republicans truly believe it’s unfair that individuals change parties prior to upcoming elections, they can change their policies to allow all to participate. It’s very difficult to elect a representative who truly represents many of us in Utah due to gerrymandering.

A more equitable way to elect congressional representatives would be to provide numbers for each district. For example in Utah, we have four congressional representatives. Each registered voter could receive a number between 1 and 4 equally until all voters hold a 1, 2, 3 or 4. This would be the congressional district you vote in. In truth, no matter what district you vote in, all of the elected officials are representing Utah.

This could be a good way to set congressional districts across the country, numbers 1-53 for California, 27 for Florida, etc.
