Letter: Sedition caucus has become the enemy within

(Evan Vucci | AP photo) In this Jan. 6 photo, people listen as President Donald Trump speaks during a rally in Washington.

Following the violent attack on the U.S. Capitol by insurrectionists attempting to install Donald Trump as dictator by force, Congress had the unequivocal responsibility to demonstrate to the world that our democratic process would not succumb to mob rule.

Instead of voting unanimously to certify the results of the Electoral College, and without a shred of evidence of election fraud, 145 Republicans aligned themselves with the insurrectionists’ attempt to destroy our democracy by voting against certification.

These members of the sedition caucus are willing to sacrifice 240 years of hard-won democracy to satisfy their lust for power, greed and personal gain by supporting a lawless, corrupt and mentally deranged president hell-bent on becoming dictator by force. They violate their sworn duty to defend the Constitution. Their actions are treasonous. They have become the enemy within.

For four years, the Republican party has supported Trump’s mockery of our Constitution and his subversion of our democracy, and ignored Trump’s calls for violence. In Utah, this includes Sen. Mike Lee and Reps. Chris Stewart and Burgess Owens. Now, in their blind hypocrisy, they condemn the violent attack on the Capitol for which they are complicit.

Clearly, Trump must be removed from office immediately and the Republican sedition caucus should be expelled from Congress. As cowardly enablers, the vast majority of the Republican party have abdicated their right to govern.
