Letter: Armed thugs are not ‘militia'

(Rick Egan | Tribune file photo) Protesters chant "Hands up don't shoot" as they walk past the counter protesters at Cottonwood Heights police station on Monday, Aug. 3, 2020.

I have a bone to pick with The Salt Lake Tribune. In the subheadline of the lead article on Tuesday’s front page, “Protesters, counter protesters, militia trade barbs, avoid violence,” the word militia is a misnomer. The thugs who showed up in their battle gear and long guns were not a militia. They were a bunch of white supremacists who came to intimidate peaceful protesters, not a militia. To refer to them as such gives them a credibility they do not deserve. Our modern militia is called the National Guard.
