Letter: The coronavirus will not just ‘go away’

(Francisco Kjolseth | Tribune file photo) Lt. Gov Spencer Cox holds a press conference at the Utah Capitol on Tuesday, July 7, 2020, following his win in the Republican primary race for Utah governor over former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman.

On July 10, Utah yet again hit another record number of confirmed cases of coronavirus, and our death toll continues to rise as well. Utah is now one of the world’s top 25 spots for confirmed new cases in the past week.

Population adjusted, Utah now ranks with Brazil for new cases — a country not known for its stellar pandemic response.

Utah relaxed restrictions before cases of COVID-19 ever began to decline, abandoning the health of the state in the mistaken hope that increased economic activity on the part of the populace would make it “go away.”

At the head of Utah’s Coronavirus Task Force is Lt. Gov. Spencer Cox. Given Utah’s proclivity to vote Republican, he is most likely our next governor. He seems to have yet to learn that a healthy economy goes hand in hand with a healthy populace.
