Letter: People who make up their own rules

(Marcio Jose Sanchez | AP file photo) Demonstrators hold signs as they protest the lockdown and wearing masks Saturday, June 27, 2020, in Huntington Beach, Calif.

What shall we call the new American underclass that refuses to stand up for public health? The never-maskers who defy government policy and the recommendations of experts. The I-ain’t-afraid-of-nothing types.

They thumb their noses at common sense and science. They make up their own rules, their own Constitution, their own history of the world.

These are the party people, the live-for-today and to-hell-with tomorrow people. The pseudo-citizens who care more about their own daily pleasures than the lives of their vulnerable parents and neighbors.

Should we call them delinquents, or drama queens, or knuckleheads?

What is going on in these people’s minds? Are they this way because they don’t trust others, can’t allow themselves to be vulnerable, won’t take advice?
