Letter: Parents, wear your helmets

(Rick Egan | The Salt Lake Tribune) Guatavo Dais rides his bike in Liberty Park with his 4-year-old daughter Arlenne, Friday, May 15, 2020.

I was shocked that The Salt Lake Tribune would print a picture — on the front page no less — of a father and daughter riding bikes in Liberty Park. The father was not wearing a helmet.

I realize that the argument could be made that there is limited traffic in the park. However, there are still automobiles in the park. They were both wearing their masks, which is commendable. Are they needed outside? Is a mask more important than a helmet?

I live across the street from Sugar House Park and very near to the Parley's Trail. I am continually dismayed in seeing parents not wearing helmets when riding bicycles with their kiddos.

“Do as I say, not as I do.” Is this the modeling we want for our youth?

As a retired teacher and a huge advocate for young people, I say that parents need to pay attention to what their actions are telling their youth. When is the state going to have a helmet law for bicyclists?

As we approach the summer season, parents, please put on your helmets as you ride with your youth. Let’s not have unneeded accidents.
