Letter: Now is the time to beat swords into plowshares

FILE - In this Dec. 15, 2019, file photo, U.S.Navy Capt. Brett Crozier, commanding officer of the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71), addresses the crew during an all hands call on the ship's flight deck while conducting routine training in the Eastern Pacific Ocean. The commander of the U.S. 7th Fleet visited the leadership of the USS Theodore Roosevelt in Guam, where the aircraft carrier is being cleaned after an outbreak of COVID-19 among its crew. The ship’s commander, Capt. Crozier, was fired for going outside of the chain of command in asking for help for the outbreak, in a decision now under review. The current situation with the aircraft carrier Theodore Roosevelt shows the difficulty of fighting a war at this time.

How can an Army or Navy be maintained with COVID-19 among the troops? The short answer is that it can’t. And all nations are faced with the same dilemma. Conventional warfare may be doomed, at least for a few years. This seems like a good time to pull back on it.

The U.S. may have to bring home many of the troops. Will we be forced to beat our swords into plowshares and our spears into pruning hooks? The best possible outcome would be for “Nation to no longer take up the sword against nation, nor train anymore for war.” Maybe Isaiah will get the last word — at least for a few years.
