Letter: Report on numbers was breath of fresh air

Medical staff of a mobile unit take samples from a woman to test for Covid-19, at the Santa Maria della Pieta' hospital complex, in Rome, Wednesday, April 1, 2020. The new coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms for most people, but for some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness or death. Andy Larsen, your talent is being wasted on the sports page.

Don’t get me wrong, I like athletics and I daily turn to The Salt Lake Tribune’s Sports page. But I also appreciate numbers, other than box scores, and I like cogent analysis.

The piece on “Estimating coronavirus deaths” was a breath of fresh air in a torrent of commentary, a superb discussion of viral growth and the vulnerability of assumptions behind any numerical forecast.

Over the years, I have studied statistics, finance, medicine and learned to throw an uncommonly good slider, but I’d never be able to write about this difficult subject as clearly and fairly.

Your remarkable piece of writing should be picked up and placed in every paper across the country.
