Letter: Attorney General William Barr’s true loyalty is obvious

(Susan Walsh | AP file photo) Attorney General William Barr waves as he walks on stage to speak at the National Sheriffs' Association Winter Legislative and Technology Conference in Washington, Monday, Feb. 10, 2020.

If there was ever any question about the shady relationship between President Trump and Attorney General William Barr, that was made crystal clear in how Trump responded to the AG’s recent criticism of the president.

Nobody’s kidding anybody. Barr has been sticking his nose into cases against favorite associates of Trump who have been found guilty of violating federal law. After Trump’s repeated tweets complaining about unfairly targeting Roger Stone and Michael Flynn, for example, Barr orchestrated a reduction of a sentence recommendation for Stone and set in motion questioning the prior plea agreement by Flynn.

After being faced with an insurrection by local prosecutors for Barr’s unprecedented interference, he denied being directed by Trump and criticized the president for interfering by tweet.

When is the last time you recall Trump not personally denigrating anyone who dared criticize him? His milk toast reply was not to disparage Barr, but to merely state Trump’s right to intervene in cases.

My guess is Trump enthusiastically agreed to allow Barr to complain about tweets to help distract from his obvious wrongdoing. The last thing Trump wants is to jeopardize having the AG under his unethical control.
