Letter: Trump thinks money is all that matters

(Steve Helber | AP) President Donald Trump speaks in the East Room of the White House on Thursday, Nov. 21, 2019, in Washington.

Watching the impeachment hearings, I was struck by why the president has gotten himself into such a bind.

He has been using his old bombastic, bullying and corrupt business tactics on government officials, both domestic and foreign. His whole life is predicated on the belief that money is all powerful, that people are primarily motivated by greed and that one is either a winner or a loser based on financial success.

He operates as if almost any means is justified so long as it results in a profit or some other personal gain or notoriety. Winning is everything, even when the means are dishonest, illegal or unscrupulous.

He assumes that it should be easy to intimidate, cajole or ignore what he considers to be lazy, corrupt, deep-state federal bureaucrats who get in his way. This has always worked for him in the business world, so why would it not work with a bunch of public servants who are obviously just poor dolts eking out an existence.

What he has not anticipated is that many of those insignificant public servants like William Taylor and Maria Yovanovitch are smart, articulate, courageous and patriotic individuals with high levels of integrity.
