Letter: It would be sad to lose the Outreach Garden

(Al Hartmann | Tribune file photo) The University Ward at 160 S. University Street in Salt Lake City was built in 1924.

I agree with Martin Buchert’s comment that “physical space can enhance worship.” He was commenting on the LDS church’s plan to sell its historic chapel on University Street. Another sacred space will be lost, if current plans go forward.

The Outreach Garden is a 2.5-acre haven between 400 South and 500 South, at the end of Elizabeth Street. See it for yourself. It has been cared for by immigrants, seniors, church members and neighbors at least since the 1970s. It is a sanctuary for insects, birds and deer, and also for people who find community, peace and sanity, away from the noise and traffic of the city. Fresh, organic, healthy food is nurtured and shared in this space. It is a reminder of the best aspects of the LDS church: self-sufficiency, family and community.

It is terribly sad that this historic and vibrant place may be destroyed for a parking lot. There must be another way.

Sarah Wilmot, Salt Lake City
