Letter: Free food draws free people

Does anyone else wonder why the homeless would decide to remain in the Salt Lake City area during the winter?

Even people with homes often seek refuge in southern climes during the freezing, snowy, icy months of winter in Utah. Many go to St. George. Others to Phoenix and some even farther south to Florida.

The state of California has found, as have other states that if free housing, free food and free medical care are provided, the free people will come. The greater the availability, the greater numbers of free people.

The government leaders of Salt Lake City wrestle with the problem of budgeting and trying to help alleviate a serious problem that really has no answer. I have not heard of any place in the U.S. that has come up with a satisfactory solution despite the many numbers of concerned people that spend so many hours working on it.
