I am 23 years old and currently in my second year as a high school teacher.

Every time I tell someone about my profession, I get the same responses: “You are so brave.” “Teachers are so underappreciated!” “You deserve to get paid more.” These responses are quite consistent across the board as I meet new people.

The recent article in The Salt Lake Tribune about increasing teacher salaries was an echo to everything everyone already knows and frequently express to me, but the end of the article was the important part: The Legislature will most likely not allocate funding to increase compensation for teachers.

To all of the people who keep telling me how underappreciated and underpaid I am: Stop voting for people who refuse to make the change. If you truly believe teachers are worth more than they are paid right now, take action with your next ballot.
