Letter: Listen to Thunberg and set things right

(J. Ed Markey, D-Mass., chairman of the Senate Climate Change Task Force, at a news conference at the Capitol in Washington, Tuesday, Sept. 17, 2019.

I cried when I watched Greta Thunberg’s articulate and passionate plea to world leaders. Her address cannot simply be read or summarized to feel the depth of truth in her words; they have to be felt and experienced by listening. Believe her and 30 years of scientific research.

Our leaders in Utah have failed us and for that there can be no forgiveness, unless they set things right. Restore net metering so that the rooftop solar industry can flourish. Adopt California emission rules. The list is long, but the process could be quickly jump-started by enacting wise legislation. Producing electricity from wind and solar by making it affordable for most individuals to invest in is critical to the future of humanity.

I incurred a substantial debt burden to invest in solar and a PHEV. I have gone over 4,500 miles on my Subaru Crosstrek PHEV on 19 gallons of gas. My solar panels have produced over 4,000 kWh more than I have consumed since March.

Her plea that “this is all wrong” is to all of humanity. We have run out of time. “Entire ecosystems are collapsing.” We all play our part in creating environmental problems. What will you change?
