Letter: Sad to see the demise of the Republican Party

(Andrew Harnik | AP file photo) President Donald Trump talks to the press in Washington on Wednesday, Aug. 7, 2019.

I am saddened to witness the demise of the Republican Party, the party of Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt and Reagan.

It has been hijacked by Donald Trump and should now be called the Trumpublican party. He is the supreme commander and is surrounded by his toadies who must not oppose him or they will be banished from office. Just look at Jeff Flake, Bob Corker and Will Hurd, to name a few.

And our local toadies, Sen. Mike Lee, Reps. Chris Stewart, Rob Bishop and John Curtis, and, to a lesser extent, Sen. Mitt Romney, are no better, as they twist themselves into pretzels trying to defend and apologize for their dear leader for all of his misdeeds.

The GOP is hardly recognizable anymore because it has supported dividing families and caging them at the border, promoted known sex offenders, passed tax cuts that tremendously added to the deficit, said nothing about Trump’s praise of bloodthirsty dictators, and supported tariffs, even on our strongest allies.

So much for the party of family values and fiscal responsibility.

Bart Croxford, Sandy
