Letter: Utah schools must be doing something right

(Leah Hogsten | The Salt Lake Tribune) Anna Penner is a graduate of West High School, June 3, 2019.

June is the time of year we traditionally honor our graduating seniors. Recently, West High School, established in 1890 and Utah’s first high school, ran an advertisement in The Salt Lake Tribune listing the future plans of their graduates.

Colleges accepting West High School graduates make a very impressive list: Harvard College, Smith College, Yale College, Duke University, Georgetown University, The U.S. Naval Academy and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy are just a few of the outstanding institutions of higher learning who have offered placement to West High graduates.

There is no doubt that these fine graduates in future years will join in the accomplishments of students that preceded them at West. Some of the familiar names are Earl Holding, Thomas Monson, Larry Miller, Nathan Chen and Tony Finau, and the list goes on from there.

The achievements accomplished by the students and their teachers all took place in a state that comes in last in per-student expenditure. When it comes to the education of our students, the state of Utah must be doing something right.

Congratulations to the graduating classes and thanks for showing the citizens of Utah that our public school education is very effective.

Stuart Young, Sandy
