Letter: Is our Legislature Utah’s, or the Mormon Church’s?

(Trent Nelson | Tribune file photo) Gov. Gary Herbert delivers his State of the State address at the Utah Capitol in Salt Lake City on Jan. 30, 2019.

Utah voters voted to approve Prop 2, but under pressure from the Mormon Church, “our” Utah Legislature replaced it with the highly restrictive Utah Medical Cannabis Act. The Mormon Church was against selling slightly higher alcohol content beer (1/10th of a teaspoon more of the demon alcohol) in our grocery stores, so “our” Legislature killed SB132, too. Finally, the Mormon Church was against banning “dangerous and ineffective” conversion therapy as a way to “fix” their wayward LGBTQ youth, so “our” Legislature dismantled HB399 as well. I’m wondering why we even have a State Legislature. Just let the Mormon Church set policy for the state of Utah. They already do, right?
