Letter: Lawmakers put their own ways above God’s

(Rick Egan | Tribune file photo) New House Speaker Brad Wilson conducts business in the House of Representatives, on the first day of the 2019 Utah Legislative session, Monday, Jan. 28, 2019.

In addition to the comments made by Michael Kalm in his Feb. 6 letter to The Public Forum, regarding why our state GOP lawmakers refuse to accept federal funding to expand Medicaid coverage, there is another compelling reason why our state legislature refuses to accept these funds.

In order to receive the funds from the federal government, the state would have to comply with federal oversight, which does not include any work requirements for Medicaid recipients. Many Utah Mormons believe that self-sufficiency is one of the most important tenets of their religion.

These politicians, who are largely Republican, might have forgotten that every Sunday they hear about loving their neighbor as they love themselves.

In a surprisingly antithetical way, they put their own ways above God's ways!

For reference, they might want to look up Isaiah 55:8-9.
